Some of our members have dogs that serve as therapy dogs, and regularly visit nursing homes and hospitals. Sometimes the nurse who accompanies us on our rounds will put the patient's hand on the dog's head. The patient then says a word or two about a pet they once had. After we leave, the nurse tells us "That is the first coherent thing they have said for months." Things like that are what make it all worthwhile.
